Commenting on the leaked information of 50 million Facebook users, Kara Swisher from Recode asked Tim Cook, “What would you do if you were CEO Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook?”
Cook’s answer: “What am I going to do? I will not be in that situation.” This is the first time Cook has spoken directly to Zuckerberg while discussing Apple and privacy issues.
“We care about the user experience, and we will not benefit from your personal life,” he said. Before that, in 2014, he also commented on business models he did not respond to: “When a free online service, you are not a customer, you are a product.” In the same year, he also said, “I think we have the right to privacy.”
At that time, Cook’s statement. has angered Zuckerberg. At the same time, Facebook has been facing personal security crises, but the severity is not as it is now.
In an interview, Zuckerberg expressed his anger to the press: “One annoyance I see is that more and more people are claiming that the advertising business model is, in some ways, incompatible with the interests of consumers. Well, do you think it’s just because you’re paying for Apple that you’re unifying with their interests? If your interests co-exist with them, then they’ve made the product. They are much cheaper. ”
Zuckerberg has not publicly commented on Cook’s statement last week. He’s probably still facing more serious problems at Facebook. But Zuckerberg’s frustration with Cook in 2014 may have shown the cold relationship between the two companies and the two leaders, particularly on the issue of making money from the user base.
This animosity has been transferred to the products of the defective apple: Although the iPhone has given Facebook many privileges in the operating system, Apple has removed the integration of Facebook from iOS in the past year.
Apple is not perfect, and Zuckerberg may have been right to say that Apple does not always place the interests of the user first. Facebook is one of the most downloaded apps on the iPhone. A former product manager has revealed that Apple has also collected user data to improve the application.
But the fact remains that Apple is a business model that depends on device products. It does not need targeted ads to make a lot of money. This is a big difference between Apple and Facebook, and the difference will become even clearer over time.
